Carnation Bouquet Afghan Project
I love all of you that read my blog, email me and follow me on Twitter and Facebook, and as you know I travel a lot, so I thought that it would be cool if I could somehow bring you along with me - even in spirit!
That's when the "Carnation Bouquet Afghan Project" came to mind (or CBAP for short).
Be creative with the color of the flower! You could work each round in a different color, or edge the flower in a contrasting color – use your imagination and just go for it! Let’s keep the background color a lighter one like beige, or yellow, etc That way all the carnations will POP.
Materials
1 oz worsted weight yarn each color for the flower and the background.
The Crochet Dude® size H/8-5.00mm crochet hook from Boye®
Gauge
Each square should measure 7" when finished. Please be sure that yours is as close to 7" as possible so that they will all fit together nicely! Use the size hook that you need in order to get a 7" square.
Designer Note: please start and end the square leaving a long tail, about 6".

Wouldn't it be cool if my friends out there in craft-land were to all make the same square and send it to me, then I could stitch together an afghan to display at the trade shows that I'm always going to. Then when I looked at the ghan it would feel like all y'all were with me!
And as I thought about it longer I realized that it would be really super cool if I were to get lots and lots of the same square and sewed them together to give the completed afghans to charity! So I hunkered down one evening recently and designed this afghan square that looks like a big carnation for everyone to work up. I can't wait to see it all come together!!
Crocheters that want to join in on the fun can send their square to:
And I will be updating everyone on the progress of the project. Please have the squares mailed by May 15th, 2011 and send as many as you'd like!!

Wonderful idea Drew! Great way to use up yarn bits and benefit others at the same time.

While I think it's a great idea and the square looks fantastic I'm a little too far away and far too busy to be able to join in. Have fun with it though.

Very cool idea. I make lab afghans for our senior center at Christmas time. I love making things for charity.
I will be sending you flowers!

Okay, I think this is really cool. I think I might be doing something wrong. I am new to crochet and I thought this would be a fun way to learn the post stitch. I think I am doing something way wrong, I used the hook the pattern says, and it is only 5" square. Can some one help me figure out what I am doing wrong? Can changing a hook size make a 2" difference? Do I do with a bigger hook or a smaller hook?

If you use a larger hook it should make the square bigger Katie. Just practice with different size hooks then use the one that makes the square 7". Hope this helps!

Yes, a bigger hook can make a difference. Make sure you are not crocheting too tightly. I find that happens with me, and I have to loosen my stitches. Also, make sure you are using the same yarn required. Thin yarns will make your item smaller and thick yarn will make it larger. Hope this helps.

This is a beautiful square. Working on my first one now, but having a problem getting the 3rd row correct. At the end of rnd 2 I have 11 dc on each side. To complete rnd 3 I need to repeat 6 times, but I can only repeat 5 times (short 2 sts on rnd 2). I don't know if I'm doing something wrong. Please help I would really like to send some of these out to you! Thanks

I love these, they are so cute. I don't have much yarn, I live on a low income, I wish I could send you a whole box of them. I make as much as I can for charity. God bless you and I hope you get many, many squares.
