Ugly Floors Begone!
I have a running joke with my neighbor that when I suggest a design change in her home it's like I'm waving a magic wand and *poof* the changes happen. You see, she's one of those rare humanoids that actually DOES things instead of just talking about how great it would be if one day when the planets align and Mars is no longer in Uranus and the trees start growing money and then the changes occurred. No, if she likes the idea she finds a way to make it happen and will search the city, resale shops, dusty antique stores, Craig's List, etc, until she finds the perfect thingamajig at a price she is willing to pay to make it happen.

Me? Not so much.
I have an entire file drawer dedicated to dreaming about what I could do to my home. I have magazine clippings, brochures from counter/flooring/fixture/cabinet companies, drawings rendered to illustrate just how amazing my home would be if, well, the planets aligned and Mars were no longer you know where.
But 2010 is the year of doing. I'm doing things (like invite 3D people into my home) and the thorn in my side for the last five years has been the condition of the floors in the kitchen/family room/home office. "Ugly" does not even start to describe them. The carpet in the family room was once upon a time dove grey (can you guess the era it was installed?) and the previous owners had a big ole doggy, and I have cats and there are two exterior doors leading into the room and there is a wet bar in the corner and now dear reader, can you picture the state of the carpeting? I bought a Dyson which just freaked me out because of the sheer volume of ick it sucked up the first few times I used it. Then I bought a Bissell carpet cleaner using it often and again don't get me started on the color of the water that came up no matter how often I used it.
That leads me to what happened yesterday:

The hardest working tile crew in Houston I do believe. They were able to rip out the bane of my home's existence in just under an hour and by the end of the day they had laid tiles in most of the family room. Rest assured I will have proper before and after photos to post here in the near future. I want to have the furniture all put back into place so that you can see the awesome results completely.
And yes I do have a blue and green polka dotted kitchen, why do you ask?

I was just thinking that I LOVE that you have those colors in your kitchen. I don't like "standard" kitchen colors.

i can sympathize with the whole kitchen thing..we too are redoing our kitchen. i have a question for you. (totally unrelated to the kitchen thing). everytime i would watch you on knit and crochet today i had this strange feeling that i knew you from somewhere. then, in a bio on you, i read that you went to kendall. did you ever shop at the cascade meijer store? i have worked there for 26 years and i swear i must have waited on you. i was the only "nice" cashier there..ha, ha. i work in grocery now. i just love your smile...you look so naughty!

Hahaha, I think a Dyson could come with a warning "do not sell your house after a first time use, it will get better".
Wow, to actually DO something in a house is beyond me, too. I like imagining the changes, but all the fuss that comes with the scedule, brrr.
Enjoy your new floor!
