Garden Squared

Spring is springing in a lot of places but here in Houston it done sprung a few weeks ago.  Before my vacation i wanted to be sure to get the garden in so that the little plantlings could get their roots down before the heat of summer hit.

As you may remember this was last year's garden:

I loved the garden and it produced a lot of the veggies and herbs that I cooked with last year.  But this year I thought I would take out the mondo grass edging which I've suspected drinks a LOT of the water and also I wanted it to be much more organized.  So after several days of transplanting the grass, turning the dirt over, adding organic matter and food, and installing a new border, I divided the garden into a grid:

Once I saw how many squares I had to work with I added a walkway with pavers down the center, then filled in the grid with some of my favorites plants.  The back row is planted with veggies, the center squares have herbs, and the sides and fronts are reserved for flowers (both edible and for cutting):

And this is the garden as of this morning, three weeks after planting.  I'm always amazed at just how QUICKLY everything grows!!

Here is a grid of what has been planted so far.  As you can see some of the squares have been left unplanted so that I can add more as the season goes on.

Happy spring everyone!!

For a minute there I thought you were turning into a quilter. Maybe there's hope for you yet. You inspire me all the time, but now to maybe do some planting, as long as we're not feeding the deer, bunnies and turkeys.
Remember to update your bio, too.

(I'm glad to hear you didn't throw that lovely mondo grass away.)

Very well-planned. I'm a big believer in 'measure twice, cut once' as the saying goes, or plant it before you do it. Plant and Garden Blog

This is so lovely! Do you mind me asking what product you used for your new border? I've been looking for something that looks clean and still has a bit of height. Yours is perfect!

EXCELLENT IDEA putting the pavers down the center of the bed! I made my bed four feet wide and I have a hard time reaching the back and I am always cautious when I step in to weed or water. Now I am gonna borrow your idea and put some in mine. Thanks for sharing and your grid idea was great too

Watch out for the peppermint. Mints tend to take over (the roots spread lots). I've seen people take 6" stovepipe, drive it in the ground, then plant mint, so the roots are contained.
I hope I'm not the millionth person to tell you this.

Lovely layout and combo of plants! I too like the stones in the center idea. Though.. seeing your curry there, just thought I'd FYI you... if it's this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curry_plant it's not edible. True curry comes from a tree. (We made the same mistake our first year gardening)

    And also.. what Joan said...

    Drew,

Here's a challenge for you: I'm looking for an easy crochet pattern
which would translate into a scarf.
All of the ones I've located are SO
complicated! Do you happen to know
of one that a beginner like me could
    easily learn? HELP! Kenneth
