Yarn Review - Recycled Cotton

A fun part of going to any convention or market show is to bring back stuff that is either new, or at least new to you!  i stopped by the Lion Brand booth on my last day in Buffalo (Chain Link 2009) and found myself leaving with the most amazing cotton I have seen in a long time.

Here is part of the description from the Lion Brand website:

Made from cotton fabric pieces that would otherwise be discarded when fabric is cut to produce tee-shirts, our Recycled Cotton yarn reduces waste and conserves resources. These clippings are sorted by color, minimizing the amount of dyeing needed for the final yarn. The sorted cotton fiber is then blended with acrylic for enhanced performance.

I was VERY intrigued with this description.  How cool that they are using old t-shirt pieces to make yarn out of.  And you know how that favorite old t-shirt is so comfortable you could wear it every day if someone that claims to care about you didn't hide it or worse yet throw it away and you have to dig out of the trash and wash it and put it back in the closet without getting caught?  It feels just like that.  It's soft and wearable and how many cotton yarns can claim that?  And it is 24% acrylic which will help tremendously in the care of whatever you make with it.

I whipped up a quick swatch to see how it felt to work with:

The stitch definition is amazing, and for cotton it feels very light and has great drape.  I'm going on and on because I love the idea of using cotton yarn, but I'm always a bit disappointed with the texture or drape of the ones I've tried in the past.

Again according to their website, the yarn comes in 17 colors and is available directly from Lion Brand.  Each skein has 185 yds and retails on their site for $4.49 per skein.

*from time to time I like to review stuff I find out there in the 3-D world just for fun.  I'm not officially affiliated with these companies unless otherwise indicated.

Wow...looks like a great yarn. I'll have to get some. I think it would make nice dishcloths...and a lot more.

I LOVE this yarn. I made a beautiful baby blanket out of it for a dear friend. I love knowing that it is a "green" yarn. Now if only I could buy it somewhere other than online!

I love this yarn. It washes and wears fantastically. I bought a skein back when my ACMoore first stocked it and have been using my coupons to buy more, though they don't have many colors.

    Drew,

I agree with you. I have tried some of the new recycled cotton yarns and love the way it feels and drapes too. Isn't it cool that the yarn companies are recycling now and listening to us crocheters?

I LOVE the way the colors look on that! I think it's really cool how both the yellow and the natural are visable, yet they combine to make the yellow pop.

Just FYI, the lionbrand website now says it comes in 7 colors, not 17.

I do like that yarn. I will have to get some to try. I am curious what stitch that is that you crocheted for the swatch. That is pretty.

    Cool,

How do you make it two colours?

Thanks for writing, most people don't bother.
