350 Project - Yarntopia

I thought I might start a new series of blog entries to help support the grassroots 350 Project. Click the above image to read about it on their website. Essentially it’s an effort to prop up the local brick and mortar businesses as we weather this period of economic “challenges”.

Yarntopia!

For the first installment I visited the yarn store in Katy, TX called “Yarntopia”. The shop is owned and operated by two wonderful people Amy (the knitter) and Sheryl (the crochetier). Here I am with Amy who was running the store the day that I stopped by to take photos:

And this isn’t the only reason I go there.

And you thought I was taller…anywho…

I love the atmosphere at Yarntopia – it’s bright and cheery, tidy and organized, and above all it is both knit and crochet friendly! Hooray! The yarns are organized by weight so if you are looking for a worsted weight yarn you can see your choices all in one place. That sure makes shopping easy and fun!

Stop by sometime!

That 3/50 web site is a so cool! I've heard of the "spend 50 bucks to boost our economy" concept before and am glad someone decided to gather up those thoughts, create something great and then share!

And dude, that shirt? Very awesome. Love strong colors, love 'em. The sun seems to reflect off your shirt and do a spot light directly onto a book that says Guys Will Wear These Sweaters. Simply amazing...

To support a LYS, I went to the yarn company site (Universal Yarn) and looked for a shop that carried their yarn that wasn't too far from me. I called them and asked if they carried what I was looking for, they said no, but they would order it for me. So instead of paying for shipping, I bought local, got to discover another LYS and ended up paying less per skein than the online price.

I think my dad has that same shirt.

Bless all the LYSs. The yarn community wouldn't be what it is without them.

At first glance, yes, this store is nice, but the yarn selection is very limited. On top of that, every time I have been in the store, the customer service is pretty terrible. I always get the feeling they're indifferent to me being there - to the extent that last time I was there, they told me to look online for what I wanted and offered no help or possibility they'd be willing to order it. It's hard to support LYS's like this one when every time I go there I'm so turned off.
