The Garden Stops for No Dude
Coming home even from just a week-long trip can be filled with surprises. Sometimes an annoyed cat leaves a surprise in your favorite shoes that you didn't take with you or think to hide, or you find that it only takes a week to do a science experiment in the coffee pot that you forgot to rinse out, or sometimes the surprise is nice, like finding that the tulips that had been taking their time decided to be waiting in full bloom to show you how pretty they are:

And sometimes new tenants have moved in right on schedule. When you have an organic garden and you plant fennel or dill, as the plant matures you will have these wonderful creatures move in:

That my friends is the caterpillar that will very soon become a lovely Swallowtail Butterfly! I can't wait to be surprised!!!

Great macro shots, drew! What kind of camera do you use?

Thanks for the kudos! Believe it or not it's just a cheap-o Olympis point & shoot (SP-350). I keep wanting to get a fancier camera but this one does the trick!

I feel such a caterpillar connection! Fennel grows like a weed here (literally) and after a friend brought us a cocoon once, I decided I'd sprinkle a few seeds. It has completely taken over my yard in the last couple of years, but we are now a total Swallowtail breeding ground! Our passion vine, lemon tree, and milkweed have their own visitors too. I've thought often of using the caterpillar stripe patterns in a sweater, but I've never done it.
