Mean Dean

Hi, how was your weekend?  Mine was spent tracking a hurricane and getting everything ready around the house just in case.  I know, Dean was never expected to make a direct hit here in Houston, but if it had made landfall where they originally tracked it (Corpus or even Brownsville) then Houston would have been on the "dirty" side of the storm which tends to experience heavy winds, rains and even tornadic activity.

The Crochet Dude's Hurricane Survival Kit:

  • 750 ml Tanqueray (gin has multiple uses including disinfecting wounds - what did you think it was for?)
  • 10 bottles diet tonic water - eh, to help with the above disinfection
  • 30 cans cat food
  • 30 lbs World's Best cat litter - no dust!  it's flushable! made from corn!
  • 20 cans tuna
  • Manual can opener
  • 20 gallons water
  • Intant coffee
  • Powdered creamer
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Radio with extra batteries
  • Yarn stash - I'm pretty much ready for being trapped in my house for six months
And of course this brings up one of the toughest ethical questions I've ever had to ponder.  Is it okay to hope that a hurricane doesn't hit here?  Because by hoping that it doesn't hit here doesn't it also mean that one is hoping that it hits somewhere and someone else?  Bleck.  It's hard to be happy that Dean headed south when that also means that our cousins south of the border will be dealing with him.  Double bleck.  Hows about some extreme closeups to lighten this blog post up a bit, whattya say?

What Hurricane?

As I predicted in the last paragraph (didn't know I was psychic did you!) here are some detail shots of two of the projects that I worked on over the weekend.  These will be in The Book next summer:

Drop and Give Me 20

Apparently Chandler is contemplating an exercise regimen.  I guess all the lying around in sunbeams and eating and chasing the stray insects isn't all that it's cracked up to be.  She just missed swimsuit season... perhaps she's getting ready for the holidays?  Or plotting my demise?

You need a little Limeade to mix with that Tonic water (add Gin and you have a Limey Bastard)

I feel ya on the hurricane thing. Living in Florida near the gulf, we always keep an eye on the storms as they go in there. I've watched too many head to Texas and decide to stop and think about it in the gulf and then veer straight for us. Granted, I've lived here for 28 years now, so my hurricane survival kit includes meat for the grill, filled propane tank, stocked beer in the fridge, full yarn stash, and my new light up crochet hooks. The cats are set with food and litter, and we've got two kayaks if we need them to get to the store down the road.

Love the closeups! Can't wait for the book.

    Stay safe over there!

If you had stayed in Michigan where you belong you wouldn't be worried about hurricanes, just the occasional 10 feet of snow!!! (cue Mr. Rogers: can you say LAKE EFFECT, boys and girls?) Take care of you and yours, we'll keep an eye on the weather channel.

I do the very same thing except we do not have hurricanes, we have snowstorms. I am doing my "list" now before winter gets here. Thankfully we have a wood stove so when the power goes out, and it did last year, we will at least be warm. My Uncle lives in Sherman, Tx and just a couple of months ago his music shop (he is a guitarist and very good, hard to tell I am biased isn't it) was completely flooded so be carful!!

Love your Hurricane Survival Kit! It's pretty much my weekly shopping list anyway.

Have you tried the Rangpur Lime Gin yet? The *ahem* gin-and-medicinal-tonic combination *ahem" will keep away malaria and scurvy, as well as preventing "infection."

If you get catfood in pop-top cans, you don't need the can opener.

Here in Minnesota, we had hurricane-like conditions all weekend, minus the actual hurricane. However, we're getting over a terrible drought, so it wasn't all bad.

I dunno about Dean, but Aaron sure whupped us last week, didn't it? Hopefully we'll get by with less flooding this time.

At least Houston's not an evac center like San Antonio is.

I was thinking about all weekend, hoping you weren't beeing 'pounded'!! It's so stressful, isn't it? Good thing you had all that yarn to keep you company....and of course, the gin.
    I loved the 'hurricane kit'....

Always keep stuff stocked for a storm... We've got a couple of radios and flashlights that don't need batteries, just crank and go.
